Who we are:

The Port of London Authority is the statutory harbour authority for the tidal Thames and responsible for the UK’s biggest port – 95 miles of the River Thames from the Estuary to Teddington Lock in West London. We work to keep river users safe, protect and enhance the environment and promote the use of the river for trade and travel.

The role:

We are currently looking to recruit an experienced practitioner to join the Health, Safety and Wellbeing team.

The postholder will be responsible for ensuring compliance with Health, Safety and Wellbeing requirements by providing competent advice to departmental managers, safety representatives and staff. They will be involved in the delivery of Health, Safety and Wellbeing projects and campaigns and therefore team working and attention to detail is key. As an advisory role, the postholder will have well developed communication skills with an excellent ability to act tactfully, confidentiality and build strong working relationships with stakeholders.

Responsibilities:

Safe systems

  • To provide competent health and safety advice to assigned departments within the PLA, ensuring that the teams are actively involved in Health & Safety meetings/campaigns to promote and support the communication of Health & Safety information.
  • To assist departments in completing RAMS reviews and work task briefings, as well as the delivery of toolbox talks.
  • Deliver health and safety special projects that arise from health and safety committees, data analysis or the HS&W strategy by embedding the outcome with the departments it affects, i.e. occupational health risk review.
  • Prepare processes and procedures to meet ISO45001 requirements.
  • Support and deliver health and safety improvements for assigned groups and support the rest of the team with topics e.g., scaffolding, asbestos (as examples)

Incidents

  • Support the investigation of incidents with the with the business area investigators, to ensure that initial and root causes are identified and actions put in place to prevent re-occurrence.
  • Assist in reviewing reports from contractors working on our premises or assets.
  • Submit reports as required to the HSE.
  • Input information into the PLA’s incident reporting platform; Resolver.

Compliance

  • Work with departments to maintain and undertake a rolling program of workplace inspections and audits (where required) to promote health and safety working practices.
  • Undertake workplace assessments where appropriate (noise, display screens, etc).

Communication and Engagement

  • Develop campaigns or communications as part of our reactive and planned communications on health, safety and wellbeing topics.
  • Attend and contribute to HS&W committee meetings and principal committee meetings (as required).
  • Identifying areas for improvement and developing plans for implementation.
  • Attend and contribute to external and stakeholder H&S meetings, such as PSS, special working groups and the port community.
  • To assist in development and delivery of the Health & Safety induction for all employees entering the PLA to comply with good practice and Health & Safety at Work etc. Act legislation.

Reporting

  • To assist in providing reports as required by legislation accidents to PLA staff, contractors and visitors to either the HSE or MAIB.

In addition, the ideal candidate will meet with following requirements:

  • Demonstrable experience in a Health, Safety and Wellbeing role
  • Membership of IOSH or equivalent
  • NEBOSH General certificate (NVQ Level 4)
  • Internal auditing experience
  • CDM Awareness
  • Working knowledge of ISO 45001
  • Hold a full clean driving licence
