Job Description

Department: Chief Harbour Master’s Department
Reporting to: Deputy Marine Pilotage Manager
Grade: 7
Salary: £37,565 per annum (this is the full time equivalent salary which will be pro-rata to reflect a 17.5 hour per week contract)
Allowances: 15% shift allowance (£5634.50), 10% overtime allowance and Bank Holiday allowance (£3756.50), upon completion of training (the allowances will also be pro-rata to reflect a 17.5 hours per week contract)
Contract: Permanent
Working pattern: Shift work – job-share of 17.5 hours per week (equivalent)
Base: Gravesend, Kent

Working in the Pilotage department, the successful candidate will be responsible for a dynamic roster that will involve tasking Pilots for sea/ river movements to meet the PLA’s statutory authority obligations. Duties will include planning transport requirements such as taxi/ Pilot cutter, communicating with ships via VHF radio/providing act information to pilots and overall recording of information using established IT applications.

This role will have the authority to allocate overtime and prioritise the order in which ships are served; therefore, the ability to prioritise work and be assertive when required is essential. The successful candidate will have a good standard of education with previous experience of working in a busy operational environment. You must have the ability to work under pressure, to handle varied work demands and have excellent communication skills. This post will also require someone with some working knowledge of the River Thames, although specific training will be provided.
