VTS Operations Manager

Job Description

The Port of London Authority (PLA) is the statutory harbour authority for the tidal Thames. The VTS Department maintains navigational safety in accordance with statutory frameworks, such as the Port Marine Safety Code, and is one of the largest and busiest VTS centres in the United Kingdom.

The successful applicant will support the Harbour Master (VTS and SMS) in managing and co-coordinating the daily operational activities of two VTS centres, one based in Gravesend and the other in Woolwich (South East London).

The successful applicant will hold full V103/1 (VTS Operator) and V103/2 (VTS Supervisor) certification or be in possession of a high level STCW qualification. You will have had significant experience working as a VTSO preferably at supervisory level, and or have management experience within the port industry. Candidates will need to demonstrate that they be able to lead, motivate and manage effectively, with proven and effective interpersonal skills. Excellent communications skills and an ability to work effectively under pressure are essential.

The post is based at the PLA headquarters in Gravesend, but you will also be required to work at our VTS centre based near the Thames Barrier from time to time. You may on occasion also be required to work outside of normal office hours.
